The healing power of humour 20th of July 2006
While sitting in the traffic on my way to the office one morning I was looking at my traveling companions. Can people seem so unhappy? No smiling faces! Families in cars passing by, staring at nothing. No chit-chats. As if this was not enough. I was walking down the corridor, passing some colleagues, saying hello. I got this blank stare, “Oh, morning”, that was it. No smile, no how are you? Nada. At first I thought something terrible has happened. But after a few more attempts of smiling at passer-bys it dawned on me. This is it! Most of us are focusing on the negative. Instead of looking beyond all the negativities there is actually a lot that we can be happy for.

Drugs in Sport 19th of June 2006
The greatest challenge to everything fundamentally valuable about sport is the abuse of performance enhancing drugs, known s “doping”, to gain a competitive advantage on the field of play. The essence of any sporting contest is that it should be fair, and the success or failure of the competitors based on natural talent, speed, skill, endurance, tactical awareness, training and body maintenance in its widest sense. Doping negates all of this. It dispenses with the concept of a level playing field. The drug taker starts with an unfair advantage, success is the product of a test tube not the training track, and the athlete who can afford to buy the latest and best drugs will be the chemically enhanced winner of the competition.

Management skills under the education and training spotlight 13th of June 2006
Management and leadership go hand-in-hand. Leadership is an active component of management. However, good leadership does not imply that equally good management is involved. Management skills are taught and developed through time. Many people believe that management skills are mostly generic. I am not so convinced that a manager of the local Pick and Pay store will be able to take a sports team on tour to the Commonwealth Games, even with the generic managerial skills and background!
